Our 25 Favorite Kid-Friendly Activities & Eats on Maui
Maui is pure magic—a destination that has captured our hearts time and time again, especially as a family. We’ve been fortunate to visit this stunning island several times, bringing our kids along for two unforgettable adventures. Each trip has deepened our love for Hawaii and its incredible family-friendly adventures have given us lifelong memories.

Our first trip with the kids was back in July 2018, a time when Maui’s vibrant charm was as alive as ever. Fast forward to today, and while the island has faced unimaginable challenges, including Covid and the devastating Lahaina fires in 2023, its spirit remains unbreakable. Our hearts are with the people of Lahaina who lost so much, and we believe one of the best ways to honor them is by continuing to visit this beautiful island. Hawaii itself is encouraging visitors to come, support local businesses, or even volunteer to help in the recovery efforts where possible.

We spent the Fourth of July holiday in 2018 in Lahaina. After doing our Molokini cruise, we went into town to shop and eat dinner at Cheeseburger in Paradise. We watched fireworks over the water from our table overlooking the ocean. We loved our short time in Lahaina.

Here we are on Front Street in 2018, enjoying the amazing sunset. Sadly, Front Street is no more after the fire. Our hearts are with them as they rebuild.

When we returned to Maui in January 2025, we were blown away by the island’s resilience and the warmth of its people. It was inspiring to see how they’ve not only rebuilt but continue to welcome travelers with open arms and aloha. If you’re dreaming of a place that combines natural beauty, unforgettable experiences, and a sense of community, Maui is calling. 🌺

Beyond Maui’s incredible beaches, you can find a little bit of everything on the island – you can learn about Hawaiian history and culture at a luau, learn to surf, take a snorkel cruise, see dormant volcanoes, visit a national park, drive through a rain forest, see tons of wildlife, and much more! So, let me share some of our favorite activities, treats, and eats that made our family adventures truly unforgettable.

Our Favorite Treats & Eats on Maui
Support Lahaina restaurants that have reopened
A testament to Maui’s resilience, many of the Front Street restaurants that burned down in Lahaina have since reopened in other locations throughout the island. We made an effort to support some of them by having our big family eat there and by spreading the word about the new locations. One of the best ways to aid in the recovery is to come visit Maui and support local businesses like these!

First on our list was Cool Cat Cafe. Brittany had fond memories of eating here with her family as a kid so she wanted to take our kids back to try it out. It’s a fun, family-friendly retro style diner and is now located in a strip mall in Kihei. The location is definitely not as ideal as Front Street, but they’re making do with what they can. The burgers and fries were delicious, especially after we had worked up an appetite surfing down the street in Kihei. I got the Don Ho hawaiian-style burger. When in Rome, right? And the kids meals were reasonably priced and completely eaten all gone – a winning combination.

We also tried out Kohola Brewery, which is now located in Wailea. We gave it a shot because it was within walking distance from our hotel, so Brittany and I snuck away for a quick date night. They used to brew all their drinks on site in Lahaina but have since partnered with Kona Brewing on the Big Island so they could reopen more quickly without waiting to rebuild a new brewery. We tried some mocktails (ask for no ice or it will be gone in a hurry) but I’m sure the local brews were good, too. The appetizers, tacos and burgers were tasty and made for a nice night out in the open air dining area. Those cool Hawaiian nights are the best.

Finally, for the final 3 nights of our trip we moved from Wailea over to West Maui at a Vrbo in Kahana. We lucked out that Captain Jack’s, a pirate-themed restaurant from Lahaina, had reopened just a month before right at the bottom of our building. Of course we had to try it! It was right next to the pool and overlooked the ocean. Our kids loved the pirate theme and we ate some delicious fish tacos. Definitely worth a try if you’re in the area.

Kihei Caffe
No, that’s not a typo! I’m a grammar geek and can’t help but point out there there are indeed two ‘F’s. If you’ve been to Maui before, you probably know all about this local favorite spot in Kihei. If you’ve never been to Maui, then Kihei Caffe is a reason to go!

They have the best breakfast on the island. They’ve got local grinds (savory breakfasts, like pork fried rice and loco moco) as well as sweeter stuff, like pancakes and French toast. Our favorite is the French toast with pineapple, coconut, and macadamia nuts. Add some coconut syrup and you’ll be in heaven!

Shave Ice
Drop the ‘d’ – it’s not shaveD ice. In Hawaii, it’s shave ice. And you can’t go to Hawaii and not get shave ice. Some people love it so much, they get it daily. We like to try other treats so we only do it once or twice per trip. The two places we like most on Maui are Ululani’s (which has several locations throughout the island) and Waikomo in Paia. Ululani’s is more like the typical sugary shave ice with ice cream and sweetened condensed milk on top.

Waikomo is a healthier alternative – the syrups are all natural and it’s topped with real fruit and coconut cream. It also comes in a cool souvenir coconut bowl. Can’t go wrong, either way!

Wow Wow Lemonade
Wow Wow Lemonade in Kihei is a great place to find some treats on the healthier side. They’ve got yummy frozen lemonades, acai bowls, and superfood smoothies. We loved the frozen mango lemonade in the souvenir ‘aloha’ jar.

Maui Bread Company
Another one of our favorite breakfast spots in Kihei, this local bakery makes delicious pastries and breads with a Hawaiian flare.

Halfway to Hana Banana Bread
There are a lot of places to get delicious banana bread on Maui but the most famous of them all is the banana stand at mile marker 17 on the Road to Hana. Halfway to Hana Banana Bread is a legendary treat and a must-try for anyone making the iconic drive. Located roughly halfway between the start of the Hana Highway and the town of Hana itself, this roadside stand has become an institution, known for its irresistibly moist, sweet, and flavorful banana bread that captures the essence of Maui. Whenever we make banana bread at home, we always look up the “Halfway to Hana” recipe.

Monkeypod Happy Hour
We first tried Monkeypod on a date night in 2018 and totally loved the food and atmosphere of the place. When we saw that there was another location in Ko Olina during month-long stay on Oahu in 2023, we had to take our kids back with us to try it. It can be a little pricey, especially for seafood dishes. But they do have a happy hour special where appetizers and pizzas are half off.

They have melt-in-your-mouth garlic truffle fries and a very tasty kalua pork pizza with pineapples and jalapenos. Sounds weird but it’s delicious! We took the kids to the Maui location in 2025 so we could eat our favorite happy hour dishes again. We prefer the laid back vibe of the Ko Olina location – the Maui spot is a bit louder and congested. But both are fun and the food is equally good.

Leoda’s Kitchen
Both times we took the kids to Maui, we had to make a stop at Leoda’s Kitchen for their delectable pies. The coconut cream and and olowalu lime are our favorites but they have so many varieties.

They also make savory pies, banana bread, and burgers if you want a full meal and not just pie. They’re located along the highway between Kihei and Lahaina, so it’s the perfect pit stop when traveling between one side of the island and the other.

Island Root Beer
We first discovered Island Root Beer on Oahu. Randomly saw it at the ABC Store, tried it, loved it, drank it all the time. It’s made by the Maui Brewing Company with real cane sugar, local honey, and Hawaiian vanilla. Maui Brewing Company has multiple locations on the island if you’re looking for a good bite to eat with local brews, or you can just find the best root beer ever at any ABC Store.

Whaler’s General Store coconut bread
Another one of our favorites that you can find at any Whaler’s General Store (similar to the ABC Store but less famous) is the coconut bread. They have locations throughout Maui and all the islands, so you don’t have an excuse not to find one and give this yummy bread a shot.

Our Favorite Activities and Excursions on Maui
Most of the content below is not about stuff to do on the beach. If you want our take on the best kid-friendly beaches – check out this post instead.
Wailea Beach Resort amenities
The Wailea Beach Resort is luxury Marriott property that we’ve had our eye on for a long time. We saved up our Marriott Bonvoy points and splurged on three nights at the resorts before moving to a different spot on the island.

The amenities were amazing and service was top notch! They greeted us with flower leis for the girls and kukui nut leis for the boys, along with some POG juice (pineapple-orange-guava) and some island-flavored chocolates.

They have two tall water slides, multiple pools, an adults-only infinity pool, a family area with an infinity pool and hot tub overlooking the ocean, hula lessons, ukulele lessons, lei-making classes, a game room, and all kinds of fitness and water activities. They provided complimentary reef-safe suncreen and after-sun lotion by the pool, which was a nice touch. We loved listening to the live ukulele music at night while relaxing out on our lanai. But our favorite was the delicious fresh banana bread that they served poolside for free.

If you’re not staying there, you can purchase a guest pass for the day to use the pool and amenities. The other nearby resorts in Wailea are all top notch as well. If you’re a Hilton person, try the Grand Wailea nextdoor or there’s also a Four Seasons in Wailea as well.

Wailea Beach Trail
The Wailea Beach Trail on Maui is a scenic, family-friendly coastal path that weaves through the luxurious Wailea resort area, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, pristine beaches, and lush tropical landscapes. The trail is a paved pathway approximately 1.5 miles one way (3 miles round trip), making it perfect for walking, jogging, or even pushing a stroller.

Since we were staying at the Wailea Beach Resort for the first few days, so we were able to walk out onto our lanai and be just steps away from the trail. When we were waking up before the sun thanks to jetlag, it made for a great place to take the kids on a sunrise stroll. That was our first taste of seeing the humpback whales, too! We woke up the first day and could see them spouting in the distance as we walked along the trail.

If you’re not staying at one of the Wailea resorts, it’s still a nice trail to check out. It hugs the coast the whole length of the path, giving you some spectacular views and a nice way to check out the grounds of the resorts.
Snorkel Cruise to Molokini Crater
Molokini Crater, a crescent-shaped volcanic atoll located about three miles off Maui’s south coast, is one of the most iconic snorkeling and diving destinations in Hawaii. This partially submerged crater was formed over 230,000 years ago and is now a protected marine sanctuary and seabird preserve, offering a stunning underwater world teeming with marine life and crystal-clear waters.

We first experienced this with our kids in 2018, when we went with JJ’s extended family. While there are many places you can snorkel from the shore, Molokini Crater is cool in part for the unique geology but also for the experience of being out on the water on a boat. We of course had a lot of fun snorkeling with the kids, but what made it really memorable was the glass-bottom boat where the kids could watch the fish without having to deal with the mask & fins. And the captain even let J (4 years old at the time) steer the boat with him.

When we came back in 2025, this was top of our list to do again. We noticed that the coral seemed more vibrant and the fish seemed more plentiful than before. My theory is that the reduced number of tourists over the last five years due to Covid and the Lahaina fires helped the wildlife comeback and thrive. The other part of it is that Hawaii banned sunscreen with harmful chemicals in 2022, so you can only purchase mineral-based reef-safe sunscreen everywhere on the island. So, I think that has helped as well. Honestly we were blown away by the difference between 2018 and 2025.

This time around our older kids spent more time snorkeling but the younger kids were able to enjoy flotation devices with a see-through scope so they didn’t need to use the masks. We also had a blast sliding down the water slides, jumping off the deck and into the water, eating all kinds of good food and drinks. There are several options for snorkel cruise, but for the more kid-friendly option (the glass bottom boat, etc.) we recommend Four Winds.

Bonus: if you go in the winter, your snorkel cruise doubles as a whale watching cruise! We didn’t get as up close as the smaller boats dedicated to whale watching specifically, but we still saw tons of humpback whales spouting and breaching.
Go Whale Watching
Whale watching in Maui is a spectacular experience, and the island is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales in their natural habitat. Every year, thousands of humpbacks migrate from the cold waters of Alaska to Hawaii’s warm, shallow waters to breed, give birth, and nurse their calves. Known as the kohola in Hawaiian, these majestic creatures are deeply tied to the culture and natural beauty of Maui. The best time to see whales is January-March.

You will be able to see whales from just about any beach or ocean overlook. They are everywhere all the time. Bring some binoculars, a good zoom lens, or even a drone (if you’re not afraid of crashing it out over the ocean) and you’ll have a great time.

And like I said earlier, a snorkel cruise will double as a whale watching cruise. But if you really want to get up close and person, a dedicated whale watching cruise is the way to go.

Visit Iao Valley
Iao Valley on Maui is a lush, emerald green paradise steeped in history and natural beauty. Located in Central Maui, just west of Wailuku, it’s home to the iconic Iao Needle, a towering, vegetation-covered rock formation that rises 1,200 feet from the valley floor. Surrounded by steep emerald cliffs and covered in dense rainforest, Iao Valley offers some of the most stunning landscapes on Maui. It’s a peaceful retreat filled with waterfalls, tropical plants, and breathtaking views.

It’s a great place to get the kids out in nature. There’s a short 1/2 mile loop trail that’s paved the whole way, so it’s easy for kids of all ages to do (or for parents of little kids like us to carry them since we didn’t pack a hiking backpack with us). The paved trail leads to a beautiful overlook of the Iao Needle.

Iao Valley looks a lot like the Na Pali coast in Kauai and reminded us of the lush topography of the movie Jurassic Park (though it was mostly filmed on Oahu and Kauai, the landscape here is similar). The many waterfalls are alone worth the drive. We loved the view points and the giant coconuts we found randomly along the trail.

Rent Scooters
One of our favorite things to do when we come to Hawaii is rent scooters to go out on fun little drives around the island. It makes everything almost like a double adventure. First we rented scooter to drive out to Iao Valley. It’s a beautiful drive through the rain forest and being out in the open air makes it twice as fun. The kids rode with grandma and grandpa while we slowly puttered along on the scooters. Some of us slower than others haha. Obviously this applies only if you have someone that can watch the kids while you take them out, or if you take turns if you’re by yourselves.

Another time we rented scooters and drove out to Oneuli Beach, one of our favorite Maui hidden gems. It’s a black sand beach only accessible via sketchy-looking dirt road with a run-down gate. We took our rental scooters out for a joyride and had a grand ol’ adventure navigating them down the dirt path. The beach was quiet in a cove, clean and had sea turtles and other sea life galore. And the scenery of the black/red sand against the big lava rock cliffs of the cinder cone is pretty stunning.

Drive the Road to Hana
The Road to Hana is one of the most famous road trips in the world – one that should be high on your bucket list. What makes it so unique is that within a 68-mile span, there are over 600 curves and 59 bridges. It takes between 2.5 – 5 hours to get from Paia to Hana, depending on how many stops you make along the way.

If you’re prone to car sickness just be prepared. The first time I drove Road to Hana was 2007. We were on an inter-island cruise and short on time. We didn’t make it all the way to the black sand beach. I think we made it as far as the rainbow eucalyptus trees and had to turn right around. Spending hours in the back of the car on those twists and turns with not much of a break finally wore on me and… well, 🤮
But on our family trip in 2018, we discovered the app Shaka Guide and it was great for telling us all the best places to stop. Lots of breaks out of the car, so I avoided car sickness. It will also tell you stories and cool facts along the way. This time, we finally made it to the famous black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park.

Waianapanapa’s jet-black black sand beach is a sight to behold and it contrasts beautifully with the lush green vegetation and the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean. The park offers a playground of sea arches and lava tubes as well as several well-maintained, kid-friendly trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints.

The Road to Hana can mean a lot of time in the car, which can be tough to handle for little kids. We made it to Wainanapanapa’s black sand beach and turned around. We missed out on Seven Sacred Pools, sadly. As much as I really wanted to hike the bamboo forests of the Pipiwai Trail and play in the mesmerizing waterfalls of the Seven Sacred Pools, it was another 45 minutes farther away. But it looks incredible and someday I’ll go back to check this off my Hawaii bucket list!

Hike Twin Falls
Twin Falls is one of Maui’s most accessible and family-friendly waterfall hikes, located along the Road to Hana near mile marker 2. It’s early enough along the route that you could do it separately a different day, or just plan your time accordingly for which other stops you want to make along the Road to Hana. It’s a perfect introduction to the lush rainforest beauty of East Maui, with short trails, multiple waterfalls, and swimming opportunities that make it an ideal stop for families with kids.

The trails leading to Twin Falls are relatively short and straightforward, with the first waterfall just a short walk from the parking lot. The terrain is mostly flat with some mild inclines, making it manageable even for young children. Kids will love the chance to splash in the shallow pools at the base of the waterfalls and there’s even a little rope swing.

Unfortunately, we went on a day that was very rainy so the waterfalls we raging with runoff. Definitely not safe to swim in but fun to watch. We’d recommend going on a sunnier day.
Hike the Ohai Trail on West Maui
The Ohai Trail felt like wandering through a real-life Hobitton. The green rolling hills are startling and unexpected for Maui. We saw photos and initially thought it looked a little like Ireland, too. The Ohai Trail on Maui is a hidden gem for those seeking a relatively easy hike with breathtaking views of the island’s rugged northern coastline. This easy 1.2-mile loop trail offers stunning ocean vistas, opportunities to spot wildlife, and a peaceful escape from the more crowded areas of the island.

Normally, our kids complain about hikes (“my leeeegs huuurt” and that sort of thing). But when I kept asking if they wanted to turn around or keep going, they opted to keep going and finish the loop. Zero complaints. But that’s hiking in Hawaii for you, I guess!

The trail hugs the dramatic cliffs of Maui’s northwest coast, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s no Na Pali Coast, but it is still very beautiful and peaceful. While we didn’t see many people on the trail, we laughed as our 2-year old excitedly shouted “HI!” and “BYE” to everyone we encountered that did the loop in the opposite direction.

Several viewpoints along the trail provide perfect spots for photography or simply soaking in the natural beauty. The cliffs and crashing waves below create a dramatic backdrop. During the winter whale season, the Ohai Trail is a fantastic spot to see humpback whales breaching in the distance. Bring binoculars for a closer look.
See the Nakalele Blowhole on West Maui
Hawaii has several blowholes but this is by far the coolest. It “erupts” often, high, and spectacularly. This natural phenomenon occurs when ocean water rushes under the rocky coastline through a lava tube and erupts skyward like a geyser, creating a spectacular plume of mist and spray. The blowhole is most active during high tide or when waves are particularly strong. Water can shoot as high as 50 feet into the air, depending on ocean conditions. The sight is mesmerizing and offers excellent photo opportunities.

You can easily watch from the the lookout near the parking lot or you can venture down the hillside to see it up close. There’s no marked trail and scrambling down the lava rocks is not easy. 10/10 would not recommend wearing boat shoes and carrying a toddler while trying to navigate slippery lava rock. Ouch!

And be careful not to get too close. The Nakalele Blowhole is powerful and unpredictable. Getting too close can be extremely dangerous, as the force of the water can knock people over or even drag them into the lava tube. People have drowned. Always observe from a safe distance.
There used to be a cool natural rock formation called Heart-Shaped Rock (that more like a heart-shaped hole in the rock) but sadly it recently eroded. It’s no longer there for photo opps. Bummer. The blowhole is the main attraction anyway.
Attend a Luau to Learn About Hawaiian History & Culture
No Hawaii bucket list is complete without a luau. Not only is it a chance to immerse yourself in the island’s rich cultural heritage but they all come with delicious food. While there are many options to choose from, the Te Au Moana Luaua is one of the best.

Te Au Moana translates as “the ocean tide”, which is fitting because part of the magic of this experience is being outside cliffside at the Wailea Beach Marriott. Your kids will be mesmerized by the in-ground pork cooking ceremony, live music with hula dancers, and of course the always-thrilling fire dancers.

One of the most fun aspects of it is they make it interactive. They invite people up on stage to learn to hula and even give the kids a their time to shine. We laughed hysterically as our non-dancer kids attempted to shake their hips and do the hula and their grass skirts.

Unfortunately, the price of luaus has become staggering recently. Inflation hit the island of Maui harder than most places, it seems. When we attended the Te Au Moana luau in 2018, the price was well under $200 per person, now it’s approaching nearly double what it was at almost $300 per person! Yikes. But for some people a luau like this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so just be prepared to spend if this is something on your bucket list.
For a cheaper alternative, there is a hula show in Kihei for $100.

But you’ll have a great time. The food is delicious. It’s cool to watch them pull the fully cooked pig out of the ground. There’s live music while you eat. And fantastic dancers that showcase the difference cultures and dances of all the Polynesian islands throughout the night. All while overlooking the ocean and sunset.

Watch the sunset on Haleakala
Did you know there is a national park on Maui? Haleakala, meaning “House of the Sun” in Hawaiian, is 10,000 foot tall volcano and one of Maui’s most iconic destinations. Located within Haleakala National Park, this massive shield volcano dominates the island’s landscape, with its summit soaring over 10,000 feet above sea level well above the cloud line.

It’s a long drive up from sea level to 10,000 feet and is not for the faint of stomach! It takes about 90 minutes because you’re traveling about 25 mph up dozens of switchbacks. But the views above the clouds are oh-so worth it. But come prepared to bundle up – it’s surprisingly cold at elevation.

Many people opt for watching the sunrise atop the volcano, which can be an incredible experience. But that requires driving in the dark at 3am, and making reservations well in advance. People used to bike tours and then bike down the mountain road. The National Park Service no longer allows that, so now those tours start at just 6,500 feet instead of at the summit.

We opted instead to watch the sunset, which is equally stunning. The coolest part was watching the clouds move quickly around us. At first, we were well above the cloud line then suddenly we weren’t. The skies would go from clear to foggy and back in an instant. We could see the clouds surging and billowing around us in real time, as if the mountain was alive. It’s easy to see why ancient Hawaiians revered the gods that lived atop these volcanoes.
Learn to Surf
Kalama Park in Kihei is known for its small, gentle waves, making it a favorite spot for beginner surfers. Surf schools and instructors frequently bring students here to learn in the forgiving conditions. Really, there is no better spot on the island for beginner surfers than this beach in Kihei.

We used to live in California so we knew how to surf and teach the kids ourselves, so we opted to not do the lessons. We just rented a surf board for $30 a day from Maui Waveriders (one of the few places on the island that hasn’t raised their prices post-Covid, so we highly recommend it). We loved it so much in 2018, we came back for more in 2025. Our three oldest kids have now all learned to surf in Kihei.

And while the kids are out learning to surf, there’s a great little section of sand for the rest of the crew to hang out on as well. It’s hard-packed sand, so it’s good for writing messages or building sand castles. You can see by the impromptu “I LOVE SURFING” message that our 8-year old wrote how the kids felt about it!

Ho’Okipa Lookout for Surfers & Sea Turtles
The Ho‘okipa Lookout is one of the most iconic and scenic spots on Maui’s North Shore, especially famous for the incredible views, great surfing conditions, and natural beauty. Located near Paia, it’s the best spot for seeing Hawaii’s famous ‘honu’ (sea turtles). And in the winter, it’s a fun spot to watch big wave surfers. You can stand on top of a small cliff, elevated and closer to the action. And there’s a guardrail to keep the littles safe as well. Watching the surfers there was pretty awe-inspiring.

And bonus! On top of going to watch the pro surfers out in the waves, take a few steps down the hill to the sand and you can see dozens of sea turtles gathered to sunbathe on the beach. Both times we visited (summer and winter) we saw a ton. More than I’ve seen anywhere else. This most recent trip we counted over 45, though I’m not entirely positive one or two weren’t just big lava rocks because they blend in really well.

Whether you’re an avid water sports enthusiast, a nature lover, or someone who just wants to relax and take in the views, the Ho‘okipa Lookout is a must-see during your Maui adventure.

Take Family Portraits
We are one of those families that likes to take family photos in matching or color-coordinated outfits while on vacation. Even if you don’t don matching aloha shirts, you might still want to find a place for a family portrait to commemorate your trip. We always bring a tripod and just use our iPhones, but some of the resorts, like the Wailea Beach Resort, offer photography services on site. Or you can find local photographers on Groupon for a more affordable route.
One spot we recommend is the Wailea Beach Resort lobby. They have some beautiful big banyan trees with a large ‘ALOHA’ sign that people love to take photos in front of, day or night (the sign lights up).

Another spot we recommend is the Kapalua Bay in West Maui. The beach is a nice scenic spot for them but on either side of the small bay, there are rock outcroppings with grassy areas that are perfect for family photos. You can opt for an ocean sunset background or in the other direction, the beach and palm trees make a perfect tropical backdrop.
We like to wait until the last night to do them, when we’re all nice and tan. These were some of my favorite photos of the trip!
